A thing that I find really cool of the foxes is that small dark spot on the sides of the mouth Cool Watching many fox photos I realized that this particularity is present only in some fox species, and in the same species not all foxes have this spots

emphasize this particularity.

What about this particularity, and what is its definition??? Studying

I learned that the small dark strip on the front paws of some species of wolves is called "signatus", it's a well known and documented particularity and is disctintive of European wolves. You can see it

(sometimes is present in hybrids... a Czech wolfdog who I know has a light signatus) There are other particularities of the wolves (and other wild canids), as the "fleshy bridge" between the two central pads of the front paws...

...but I cannot find anything about particularities of the foxes Sad

first I thought they were directly where the whiskery are, but their position can vary a bit and not all have got these markings.
Redfox Words' "the Bold Vixen" has got only slight markings:

Redfox (half silverfox) "Sophia" got the markings a bit back in red

Marblefox "Faruk" got very strong markings, directly where the whiskers are:

Marblefox "Fjell" hasn't got the markings at all (but has other beautiiful markings)

You know, I never noticed that before. Neutral But now that I look, a lot of fox pictures I see display those spots. Very interesting.
