WHAT IS A DHOLE?
The dhole (Cuon alpinus) is a species of wild dog from southern Asia. It's an unusual canid, living in highly social packs. Though threatened with extinction, so far it has received very little attention. Unlike the wolf or African hunting dog, few people have even heard of it!

Thanks ZerdaFennecus. I was reading about them the other day. one think that stuck in my head was that they have only 40 teeth instead of the 42 of other canidaes. it was a set of molors.
I think I will be doing somemore research on dholes soon.. probley post on them after I do. |

I saw a pack of dholes in Kanha National Park, central India, about six years ago and didn't notice their teeth
They were feeding on a chital (axis deer) carcass. They're magnificant animals, much misunderstood like wolves. There are Indian wolves in Kanha also but I didn't see any. They're extremely elusive. Kanha is kind of big predator central, as it is also inhabited by tigers, leopards, sloth bears and golden jackals. I saw four tigers, incidentally, including a large female who appeared to be pregnant. It's one of the few places in the world where tigers actually seem to be secure.
These are photos taken in Kanha.

Yes, kind of. A lot bigger though. They are supposed to make a whistling cry. _________________ Visit my

I have to take the researchers' word for that; didn't hear anything
PS: the singular is "canid". Canidae refers to the whole family. _________________ Visit my

Don't worry
My last ever project at university was a bit of a rush, because I was thinking about my five impending exams. I did the draft with "x" in the stats part on a graph, thinking that I would easily be able to correct it later. Guess what...
I was probably fortunate simply to have a large red question mark put next to it!
Anyway, back on topic, I tried searching for a dhole whistle on the web, but no one seems to have uploaded the sound. I found one site though where it said that dholes can cluck (like chickens) as well as whistle. Certainly an unusual species. _________________ Visit my

I saw a little thing on dholes once. The pack had a cub that was crippled. they just kept raising it even once it grew up kept feeding it and excepted it and it helped with later litters. |
