OK, I'm no artist (yet?), but I think it looks pretty good, save for one detail. Here's a little pointer for you, Take a look at this photo:

Notice how the curve of the animal's hindquarters form it's 'behind'. That'd be the only major problem in your sketch. With that fixed, the rest of the picture should just 'automatically' look better.

Also, notice also how the tail sort of 'flows' off the end of it's back. Look at any quadruped and you'll see this. Anatomically, the tail is simply an extension of the animal's spine; the top of the back and tail flow together as one long curve. This is how the tail should be drawn.

Other than that, everything looks fine. There are a few minor little things I could point out, though it's more a matter of personal taste. Your legs look a bit short at first, but are fine if one considers the fox to be extra fluffy and what you see is just sticking out from the fluff, if you know what I mean. The neck could probably stand be shortened a bit next time. Overall, don't worry about your proportions too much, you'll learn for yourself what looks best as you continue to draw.

I think the best tip for drawing animals is to simply look at a photo of the animal and draw what you see.

Out of curiosity, McCloud, do you draw much? That sketch does look pretty good. I mean, like, it's better than I did on my first attempt, anyway.

I don't draw much. Partly because I find it hard to sit still long enough to make an honest attempt, and because I never thought much of my drawing. Looking at your sketch, though, I'm kind of inspired to give it another shot. I'd love to be able to draw animals like wolves and foxes, even as well as you did. Some might not think much of your work, James, but at least you tried. Surely that counts for something.

Anyway, if you continue to sketch, I'd definitely like to see more of your work.
