The last leg of my journey home from college is a walk a good couple of blocks from the bus station to my grandmothers place. Now I can also take the bus, but I walk because the weathers nice. The final few blocks is a downhill stretch and then a turn down the street into the Cal-De-sac where grandma's place is.
Today classes ended about an hour and a half early, a very rare occurence indeed. I also had decided to stay with Granny this week, as a bit of a change from visiting my family. Anyhow, I turned the corner onto the downhill final stretch, and almost immediately, a four footed figure appeared out from behind a hedge about four yards in front of me and trotted briskly down the hill; I quickly asked myself in my head, what was that?
It's fur was a dusty colored light brown, and I at first thought it was a cat, but it's tail was too bushy, and it was a little too big for cat, more like a small dog, but unlike any dog I ever knew, it moved silently, making no sound whatsoever, not even footsteps. It was also more light on it's feet than any dog of that size that I've seen. I got a side view, and even a glance from it as it stepped out into the street momentariliy, almost getting hit by a car. At that point, I knew without a doubt that this was definitly a fox, and what luck, it was heading in the same direction I was, down the hill!
At first it was about 6 meters ahead of me, but a trotting fox moves faster than a walking human with a backpack on, and it drew a little farther from me each second, but every time I thought it would go out of view, it would duck into a nearby driveway for a few seconds, just long enough that I could catch up to within 8 meters of it, and then it would dart out again and resume it's walk. It didnt seem to mind me following it other than that it kept a good distance in front of me. After about a minute of this throughout which I just kept walking quietly behind it, watching in wonder (I speeded up my walk a bit near the end to try and keep up with it), it weaved way out into the middle of the street and nearly got hit by a car AGAIN, actually two cars, as a matter of fact, and then turned down a side-street and this time it didnt pop back out a few seconds later.
I stopped momentarily at the street and walked a couple of steps down it just to see where it disappeared to, and I got one or two quick glances from the fox as it met up with some other animal (It was a little too far to see what this one was was), then vanished down what I'm guessing was a path into the woods nearby. I considered for a second checking out the place where it had vanished, but I decided to just enjoy the rest of the walk home instead, and thank the Lord for this wonderful little surprise.
This is the very first time I've ever seen a real live fox in person, so it's a big deal to me, especially since I had no idea that foxes even lived around here, although I have wondered before. I think I'll be walking home a whole lot more often after this.
