Hi everyone, just got back to the UK from Jasper, Alberta Smile

I saw two wolves in the Athabasca Valley, which runs across the heart of this huge wilderness park. The first one was a very large white wolf with a strong tint of brown in its fur. Most likely a male, but I know he isn't the alpha male of the local pack (called the Signal Mountain pack) because of the colour, so he must be a subordinate. Given his size that's quite a scary thought - what kind of wolf could dominate him?? Shocked

The second wolf was on the same road a few days later. This wolf was silver-black in colour and headed in the opposite direction. The wolves are hunting in the ponds and woods (probably for elk) and then taking meat to the den site and the alpha female. This is rather worrying as they have to cross awful Highway 16 each time, and I know from past experience that wolves do die on that road. Still, these ones have been fine so far.

I haven't got any pictures because both sightings were distant and very brief. But I can show you a very wet coyote, standing in the rain:

And another one having a good shake!

And lots of other Alberta wildlife,

It's cool to see wild wolves, but I always try to keep my distance as some of them are very scared of people and can be frightened out of good habitat if you're not careful Wink

Of canids? Wolves are very difficult to photograph Coyotes are easier but still can be quite hard. Foxes vary enormously depending on where you are. I saw one in Alberta a few weeks ago but there was no chance of a picture at all, unlike back in England where they sit and watch you Smile
