I went to Alaska for about three weeks and saw some wolves. They were pretty big too, bigger than other wolves I've seen.

Yeah. It was awesome.

Alaska huh? Sounds fun; I'd like to go there sometime; shame that they are still hunted there Sad Maybe one day I can go to Alaska, got a lot of places that I'd like to go to so Alaska is on my list and it'd be great to see some wild wolves there.

Yeah i'd like to visit too. I wanted to live there once but then found out you can't have anything exotic. Their laws are even worse than CA and CA wont even let you have gerbils.

You can have just about any herp in AK though just cuz they know they wont survive long if they escape.

I'm not really opposed to hunting long as it's done in a sensably controled manner and the population can handle it but AK wolf "hunts" are insane shooting them from the air like that cuz they eat to much carabo and compeat with carbo hunting people do, well the wolves were there first.

Wolves in Alaska are mostly hunted for sport and there is no 'controlled manner' way to hunt them. Wolves are endangered just about everywhere so it always effect their population.

nice thought but they wont pay attention to anything but real paper signature petitions. The E-petitions aren't much more than polls. It might get glanced at by a secratary or helper of some kind if your lucky.

Or better yet write a letter or make a call. You can do either and they do keep track of those.

Three cheers for giving it a try, Silverfox - are you in touch with any conservation groups up there? If you want to get involved, the best thing is to find locals who are already involved. The

Remember it takes an average of 11 years, so they say, for a conservation campaign to reach its resolution...e-petitions are mainly useful for drawing attention, though. I got a 10,000 signature pen-and-ink petition over another wolf issue and that was officially noted. Believe me though it was no piece of cake organising that. Bring it!

Failia, which part of Alaska did you see the wolves, if you don't mind me asking? And what colour were they?

Well, I was in Southeast Alaska in the Denali Nat. Park region.

The wolves were mostly grays and browns. Pretty colors. ^^

I can't beleive I missed this thread; but you're lucky to be able to see wild Alaskan wolves. I bet they are big; all wolves are bigger than most would think.

We get some visitors to WMS who would like to interact with the wolves, who see and hear them, who choose never to enter their pens. They are huge, intimidating creatures, and many people are leery at first. Everything about them is huge, and they are not shaped like any dog.

I know some of the wolves understand this, and make efforts to ease peoples fear. They can sense when someone is uneasy and they generally approach the person slowly, but with a friendly body language style, and once the person touches the wolf-he or she knows that everything is OK.

When Mishomi was under anesthesia for his tail tumor, he was sleeping afterwards, and I was laying with him to make sure he kept breathing. I was laying with him when I opened my eyes, and took in his huge form. "My God what a HUGE wolf you are!" I thought.

I like to think that Mishomi and the other wolves project themselves as smaller to people so people will be more easy around them, I fully realize how ridiculous that might sound.. From my experiences with them, running the gamut from mundane to incredible to unexplainable, that it is very possible.

Perhaps Mishomi makes himself appear smaller so people will come up to him-he craves human attention. As if to say "I'm not so big, now get in here and wrestle with me!". You can see the size justification in pictures, and it's just amazing.

Most people probably just think that wolves are the size of dogs, but they're bigger than Great Danes. And Great Danes are huge dogs. Razz
