lol.
No I dont think he ever did get the bird. It reminds me of an old comic book cald Calvin and Hobbes. In one of the comic strips you see Calvin (a six year old kid) in front of a tv and he is saying,
idiots, explosives and falling anvils, THAT is what entertainment is all about.
Anyway nice picture. _________________ Minds are like parachutes. They only function when they are open. Sir James Dewar |

That's just a coyote in his winter coat. Wolves have much broader chests and heads and very long, thick legs. The biggest wolves are about three times as tall as coyotes.
Grey wolves do NOT breed with coyotes. This is just a myth. Red wolves crossbreed with coyotes sometimes, but they're much more closely related.
I recently added a scale drawing to the page below which shows the fox's size compared to some common dogs. On the same scale, the coyote is very similar to the border collie. A big grey wolf would be taller than anything on this, except the human of course

Yeah Sittingfox is right. I have no idea how I thought that that was a wolf, except probably the color Anyway, wolves are huge, most people (that I speak to) think that they are no bigger than a medium sized dog.
I was going to post this same basic post but I thought I might as well do it now. _________________

Coyotes do vary a bit - they're larger in the east because they've crossbred with eastern wolves. According to my guide, they stand about 23in - 26in at the shoulder. A border collie is 21in; so it's a little smaller, but it's the closest on that graphic to a coyote.
Just to clarify, wolves vary in height also, with the Mexican wolf subspecies being very small; and the mountain wolves I'm familiar with being absolutely enormous. The scientific world is in the middle of a debate over whether the rather small "wolves" of the Middle East are actually a seperate species, so I won't drag them into it.
Don't feel bad. Yellowstone is full of tourists looking at coyotes and thinking that they're watching wild wolves _________________ Visit my

Hm, sorry for the confusing terminology. When I say "eastern wolf" I mean Canis lycaon (otherwise known as Canis rufus) that is, the red wolf. A separate species from the familiar grey or timber wolf.
And the Middle Eastern wolves I mentioned are those in Iran and Oman etc., not the eastern seaboard of the US!
I agree that most people would be able to tell the difference between western coyotes and grey wolves given a proper chance, but, when out in the field, a lot of tourists seem to let their dreams do the talking! However, once a grey wolf has been seen in the wild, it's very difficult to ever mistake a coyote for one ever again. The difference is too obvious then.
Also, genuine wolves are often seen at great distances, perhaps a mile or more away. If you want to see wolves without harming them, the best thing is to buy a spotting scope or very powerful birdwatching binoculars. Ditto grizzlies, also preferably seen at a distance. I saw a grizzly on my last trip to Alberta that was a good 4km away. (Well, okay, I scanned the mountainside with my scope until I saw it - it was invisible to the naked eye) _________________ Visit my

Ah, easteren wolf; I didn't know that they were red wolves. Well, I learned something new today
I agree that once someone sees a wolf they wouldn't so lightly confuse a coyote with a wolf again. I think that most people do not realize how big wolves are so when they see a good sized coyote, they think it's a wolf.
Probably some scope on a camera to see the wolves from afar
But all in good times, after high school, we'll see where I go. _________________
