This is a curious issue for me: The relationship between foxes and felines, specifically how they get along. A lot of people ask if its safe to let their cat outdoors when there is a fox around.

Obviously this is a conflict of interest for animal lovers: Should I try and shoo the fox away so I can safely let my cat out, or should I confine my cat indoors indefinitely so it will be safe for both animals?

My local SPCA strongly encourages owners to keep their cats indoors at all times, for their safety and well-being (there are a LOT of dangers for outdoor cats); But some might think it somewhat cruel or unnecessary to keep their cat locked up inside 24/7. Perhaps both are valid viewpoints.

Some sources say that foxes will avoid fighting cats and that there is little risk to the kitty, and others say that your cat should be kept indoors if foxes live nearby otherwise things may get nasty. so which is true?

I'm sure I've read in a few places about major conflicts, but can't remember where anymore.

I think it would be great if anyone who can find articles and stuff on the 'net pertaining to this, or any examples or stories of fox/feline interaction or conflict, post it here, or a link, so we can discuss it. Maybe we can come to a solution.

If I had a fox I would not let it outside unatanded when there are cats outside, cats can be really dangerous with their claws.

Well, knowing that there are conflicts between dogs and cats...it would make sense that there would be conflicts between foxes and dogs. When you think about it, they probably would fight...

I haven't been able to do any research for like a year now but from what I remember when I started this forum, foxes and cats generally do not get along very well. There are often cat-issued injuries on foxes. SittingFox had a couple stories on the issue, I think. It was a couple years ago when I read up on that. But yeah, cats are very territorial against foxes, but sometime they'll ignore eachother while in the same area.
