I've recently come across an interesting little adventure game, by the title of 'Inherit the Earth: Quest for the orb', that is definitly worth checking out.

I've only played the demo, but it is a jewel of an adventure. It is a point and click adventure game set in a world of the future where humanity has disapeared and animals (who are now two-legged 'morphs') have, well, inherited the Earth. How or why this happened remains a mystery, as this piece of lore in the game describes:

We see the sky, we see the land, we see the water
And we wonder, Are we the only ones?
Long before we came to exist, the Humans ruled the Earth.
They made marvelous things, and moved whole mountains.
They knew the secret of Flight, the secret of Happiness,
And other secrets beyond our imaging.

The Humans also knew the secret of Life,
And they used it to give us the four great Gifts:
Thinking minds, feeling hearts, speaking mouths, and reaching hands.
We are their children.

They taught us how to use our hands, and how to speak.
They showed us the joy of using our minds.
They loved us, and, when we were ready,
They surely would have given us the secret of Happiness.

Now we see the sky, the land, and the water we are heir to,
And we wonder, Why did they leave?
Do they live still, and whence? In the stars?
We wonder, Was their fate good, or evil...
And will we also share the same fate one day?

Intriguing, isn't it?

The adventure begins as Rif of the fox tribe and his girlfriend Rhene travel far across the land to compete in a puzzle contest of some sort, Rif being good at puzzles. The night before the contest, something very bad happens. The Orb of Storms, an ancient human artifact with the power to predict the weather, dissapears. Being foxes, Rif and Rhene are naturally (and wrongly) accused of stealing it.

Rif convinces the animals to give him a chance to put his puzzzle-solving skills to use and find the Orb and prove his innocence. He is acompanied by a pair of guards, Eeah of the elk tribe, and Okk of the boar tribe, who will assist him, and make sure he doesn't escape. And just so Rif doesn't get any funny ideas, Rhene is held captive by the boar tribe until he returns with the Orb.

You guide Rif and his, erm, companions, across the country on the search for the Orb of Storms. In the proccess they meet a wide variety of animals, and also discover parts of the greater mystery, that of the humans' fate.
The website is here, definitly take a look:

There are versions ofthe game for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and a demo for download as well. Unfortunately, the demo doesn't go to far. just far enough to make you want to get the full game and see what happens next.

There is also a webcomic based off the game, a link to that is on the webpage above, also worth a looksee.
