I think that's the probelm right there, people don't know what they are really doing when they're trying to help out the skinny-looking animal. Only actual way to make them understand is to let them know of the dangers and risk that the innocent act of feeding the hungry-looking animal; otherwise they won't know what harm they are causing.

Thanks SittingFox, I think it's rather important that everyone reads this topic becuase I know I certainly learned something from it. Overall, it's bad and should be avoided; however, an occasional treat used as a lure is okay.

Thanks Lupis Fang Smile but again, when I'm in North America, I would absolutely never use food for a lure no matter what the circumstances.

I think this is a very important topic because many thousands of animals and a few people have died through getting this issue wrong. One case of many: two wolves off Vancouver Island a few years back started wandering across a certain beach. The visiting tourists thought it funny to feed them, play with them, etc. The wolves started interacting with people more and more. Eventually one of them bit a man quite badly. Both wolves were both promptly shot. As far as I know not one tourist was ever held to account for the illegal behaviour that led to the attack and the wolves' deaths.

This is the tragedy - the wolves' deaths were needless. No food, no problem.

On a related point, I would like to make clear that these photos I take of bears etc are NOT done through encroaching too close to them. With the exception of my garden foxes and some bold birds I don't try to get close to wildlife. I have

and if I think I'm disturbing the animal I leave at once.
